Balancing the Scales: Case Studies for Developing Personalized Treatment Plans and Dispelling Misinformation in Obesity Management
Pharmacists play a unique role in obesity management through medication selection and titration, monitoring, adverse event management, identifying drug interactions, and assisting with access to medications. Additionally, pharmacists are crucial for answering patient questions and providing patient education to achieve long-term goals and improved outcomes. However, given the stigma associated with obesity, many patients are still hesitant to seek care, leading to a variety of comorbidities, reduced quality of life, and even severe or fatal outcomes. Additionally, myths and misinformation surrounding obesity are commonly publicized, present in popular culture, social media, and even found in medical literature. This can lead to unsupported perceptions influencing clinical recommendations, disease management, and potentially ineffective or unsafe behaviors. This educational activity will use patient cases to highlight best practices in individualized obesity care and will discuss myths, misconceptions, and misinformation and effective methods to communicate accurate information to patients with obesity.
