Avian Flu Resource Center
Highly pathogenic avian influenza A (HPAI - H5N1) commonly known as avian influenza or bird flu, poses a significant public health concern with potential implications for human health. As frontline healthcare providers, pharmacists and technicians play a vital role in educating patients, managing antiviral treatments, and supporting infection prevention efforts. This resource page is designed to equip pharmacists and technicians with essential information about avian influenza, including transmission risks, recommended treatment protocols, and guidance for patient counseling. By staying informed, pharmacists and technicians can effectively contribute to public health and preparedness in the face of potential outbreaks.
While it primarily affects wild birds, avian influenza A can also infect poultry (e.g., chickens and turkeys) and various mammals, including marine animals, cats, and dairy cows. To date, the CDC reports that the risk of transmissions to humans is low. Human infections are rare and typically result from exposure to infected birds or contaminated environments and no cases of person-to-person transmission have been identified.
