Maggie English
Her Story
Maggie English graduated from Duquesne University School of Pharmacy in 2019. She completed a PGY1/2 Specialty Pharmacy Administration and Leadership Residency at the University of Kentucky. She also graduated from the University of Kentucky Gatton College of Business in 2020 with her MBA. Upon graduation of residency, Maggie accepted a position at the University of Kentucky Specialty Pharmacy and Infusion Services as the Associate Director of the Pharmacy Patient Support Services team. This is a new team dedicated to applying the specialty practice model to non-specialty patients. Maggie oversees approximately 30 FTEs, including pharmacists, technicians, nurses, and patient support representatives in order to provide the following services: incoming refill request calls, refill authorization, benefits investigation, prior authorization, patient counseling, and eventually financial assistance and mail order delivery. Maggie also serves as a preceptor for interns, APPE students, and residents. Outside of work, Maggie enjoys spending time with family and friends, outdoor activities, Irish dancing with the McTeggart Irish Dancers, and her two cats, MJ and Jojo.

Recent Significant Projects
I lead a refill authorization workgroup at UK HealthCare to streamline our processes and ultimately improve turnaround time. I am also leading a project to transition all incoming clinic refill request calls from our access center/scheduler to my team under pharmacy. We have transitioned over 30 clinics so far!
Initial Involvement in ASHP
I am a member of the ASHP Specialty SAG for Workforce Development. I presented a poster on refill authorization at the 2022 Summer Meeting. And I was also recently elected to KSHP Board of Directors to represent specialty/ambulatory pharmacy.
Why did you become involved in ASHP?
To stay up to date on specialty pharmacy best practices. I also enjoy the networking and collaboration within the SAGs. I have learned so much from the Workforce Development SAG!
Advice for Someone New to the Specialty Area
Always be willing to learn and have a questioning attitude in order to ensure you are consistently working to improve processes. My role is brand new and keeping an innovative mind has helped me develop new workflows, standardize processes, grow the team, and ultimately benefit the clinics and patients we serve in a short amount of time.
How would you explain the value of ASHP to a friend or colleague?
ASHP offers a unique platform to learn about pharmacy best practices, connect with others across the country, and share your ideas to better the profession of pharmacy. Connecting with other ASHP members is invaluable; you can learn so much from sharing success stories as well as challenges faced. On top of this, ASHP utilizes the collective experiences and ideas from members to continuously push and improve the profession of pharmacy.
What is the value of ASHP for the profession?
ASHP strives to better the profession of pharmacy, no matter the area of practice. ASHP listens to members to understand how they can help pharmacists overcome the challenges they face in their practice. Not only does ASHP provide valuable didactic information and resources for pharmacists, they go above and beyond to educate and advocate outside of the pharmacy profession.
