Sylvia Belford

Sylvia Belford is the Operations Administrator for the Clinical Systems Education department and Assistant Professor of Pharmacy at Mayo Clinic. She also serves as secretary of the Mayo Clinic Plummer Chart User Experience and Education governance committee. From 2015 to 2018, she was the Clinical Director for the implementation and support of the Epic Electronic Health Record (EHR) and revenue cycle management system across Mayo Clinic, during what was called the Plummer Project. Dr. Belford is passionate about the efficient and safe use of EHRs in all areas of clinical practice, the promotion of good user design, and the value of education and skills mastery in EHRs. 

Dr. Belford began her career at Mayo Clinic as a Medication Management Informaticist and served as the inaugural Program Director for the PGY-2 Pharmacy Informatics residency. She also has experience implementing Epic in two other organizations, previously serving as Director of IT Clinical Informatics for Sanford Health in SD, ND, IA, and MN, and as Manager, Medication Safety and Information Technology for the University of Wisconsin Hospital & Clinics, in Madison, WI. She is a Certified Professional in Healthcare Information and Management Systems (CPHIMS) and maintains active memberships in the Healthcare Information Management Systems Society (HIMSS) and the American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE).

Dr. Belford completed her Pharm.D. and M.S. in Pharmacy at the University of Wisconsin School of Pharmacy, along with the two-year Health-System Pharmacy Administration residency at the University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics. She served as Director-at-Large then Chair of the ASHP Section of Pharmacy Informatics and Technology Executive Committee. While on the Executive Committee, she promoted the initiation of the ASHP’s Pharmacy Informatics Essentials certificate program, where she continues to serve as faculty.  She was recognized as a Fellow of ASHP in 2018.
