Program Description & History

Program Description

This 14-month immersive program features unique health-policy learning experiences in Congress and the government affairs offices of ACCP and ASHP. During the program, fellows contribute to the effective use of scientific, therapeutic and pharmaceutical knowledge in professional organization and government policy decision-making. The fellow is actively mentored while gaining experience in issue prioritization, policy analysis, legislative evaluation and policy development, current affairs research, effective writing, and advocacy program development and implementation skills. The integration of these skills becomes the foundation for a future focused on practical policy development and evaluation.

Program History

The Congressional Healthcare Policy Fellow Program, a collaborative effort of the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Pharmacy, the American College of Clinical Pharmacy and the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists, has been preparing pharmacists for public service since 2006.

The program grew out of founding director Gary Matzke’s experience as a health policy fellow in a program for mid-career faculty by the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. As a health policy fellow for the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions, Dr. Matzke realized there was a need for early-career pharmacists to have the same opportunity as well.
