ASHP’s Antimicrobial Stewardship Resources are cited as a source of best practices for implementing a hospital-wide antimicrobial stewardship program in a proposed rule issued this week by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS).
CMS has proposed a new standard that will require hospitals, including critical access hospitals, to have policies and procedures for an active and hospital-wide antibiotic stewardship program (ASP). In the rule, CMS points to ASHP’s guidance as a resource for hospitals as they design and implement their ASPs. The guidance, which is part of the Section of Inpatient Care Practitioners Resource Center, includes a toolkit
developed in conjunction with the American Hospital Association, a checklist
of the core elements for antimicrobial stewardship programs, and the ASHP Statement on the Pharmacists’ Role in Antimicrobial Stewardship and Infection Prevention and Control.
